Alice's
Journeys: Guided Tour
(The theme of the Festival
is 'Women's Journeys')
Saturdays 1st and
8th March
Meet at the Museum of Oxford, St Aldate's at 2.30 pm
Follow Alice's dream excursions through
Wonderland and the Looking-Glass. Explore locations associated
with the real-life Alice of Victorian times. Hear about zany
characters from both worlds!
On the tour we visit the Museum's ABC Gallery
to look at the scissors and other childhood possessions of Alice
Liddell, the model for Alice in Wonderland.
We see the 500-year-old shop in St Aldate's
where Alice Liddell used to buy her barley sugar sweets. In Through
the Looking Glass an old Sheep presides over this shop.
The real-life Alice was the daughter of
Dean Liddell of Christ Church College. We enter the College's
Great Hall to see a portrait of the Dean and another of mathematics
don Charles Dodgson, who wrote the Alice books under the pseudonym
of Lewis Carroll. Characters from the books are pictured in a
huge stained glass window in the Hall.
The tour is suitable for adults
and for children of 6 plus.
Cost: £6, Concessions £4,
Children £3. (Includes entrance
to Christ Church College.)
